How to know if we found the right moisturizer?

When it comes to moisturizers, we use them to protect and improve our skin. They can be used to prevent the skin from becoming too dry or too oily. Moisturizers also called emollients, are complex that attract moisture and hold the water in the skin and help smooth the skin i.e. they increase the skin's hydration.

So, how to choose the right moisturizer and how to know when it's time to find new one?

For dry skin - For treating dry and very dry skin, the most appropriate are the long-lasting, oil-based moisturizers that contain ingredients such as antioxidants or grape seed oil that prevent water evaporation.

For oily skin – For treating oily skin, water-based moisturizers that aren’t comedogenic are preferable, as there is less risk of formation of comedones.

For sensitive skin – For treating sensitive skin it is preferable to use fragrance-free moisturizers which contain soothing ingredients such as chamomile or aloe that minimize the potential allergies.

For aging skin – For treating aging skin, anti-wrinkle and oil-based moisturizers are appropriate to keep aging skin soft and well hydrated.

But, how to know if we found the right one?

If we experience a negative reaction, then the moisturizer isn’t working for us and we should stop using it immediately! Moisturizers that contain ingredients such as preservatives, fragrance, colorants or active components, like acids can cause allergies and dry, itchy or rough skin. Also, if a moisturizer is causing skin eruptions such as breakouts, it's a sign it's the wrong one. Moisturizers that are too rich can clog pores! And pimples aren't the only thing that can pop up with a bad moisturizer. A small white bump called milia can be formed and trapped beneath the skin's surface too. At the end, if the skin is too tight and dry, or too oily and greasy, it's time to switch the moisturizer!
