What causes oily skin?

Our skin becomes oily when the sebaceous glands release more sebum than required. Excessive release of sebum can lead to many skin problems like open pores, pimples, and blackheads. But, in this article, we will look at the reasons why our skin produces excessive oil.

Genetics, lifestyle, hormones, perspiration, birth control, lack of water intake are the main reasons why many people struggle with oily skin. Food also plays a major part in it and causes oily skin. To reduce the oiliness and greasy skin especially during the monsoon when humidity levels are high and the skin is already prone to excessive sweating and perspiration there are certain foods that need to be avoided.

Here's a list of foods that must be avoided especially for those with oily skin:

  • Fried Foods – Samosa, french fries, deep fried crispy pakoras wreak havoc on our skin health. These foods can be very damaging for the skin. So, all fried foods and heavy gravy foods that are loaded with butter and ghee should be avoided.
  • Refined Grains - Slices of bread, cakes, cookies, candy, portions of pasta, pancakes, and pretzels - all of them are dangerous for the skin and can cause oiliness and greasy skins that can lead to pimples, acne, and other skin problems because refined grains lose fiber and other nutrients during processing.
  • Sugar - Corn syrups, white sugar, milk chocolate, cakes, biscuits and ice creams are nothing, but bad for the skin’s health. Ditching these things from the diet can help get rid of the oily skin.
  • Dairy products - Products high in saturated fats like butter, cream, ghee, and cheese can cause a very big skin problem!
  • Processed Foods - Sausages, bacon, steaks can cause greasy skins and initiate acne and pimples. Also avoid packet and processed soups, noodles and ready to eat mixes and instead adopt a healthier freshly made snack or meal.
