What do antioxidants in fact do for you?

What do antioxidants in fact do for you?

Antioxidants are naturally occurring vitamins and minerals that can protect the skin against free radicals which actually are molecules that damage the skin with adhesion to the collagen and by weakening the skin’s elasticity. They come from the environmental issues like harmful air pollutants and chemicals, that in fact suck the life out of the skin. Therefore, the antioxidants neutralize those free radicals and protect the skin from damage.

Additionally, we have a list of the 4 best antioxidants for the skin:

Green tea

Green tea is filled with polyphenols that not only “clean-out” free radicals, but also have anti-inflammatory properties that are excellent for anyone with rosacea, psoriasis, sensitive skin, and even acne. But, the amount of antioxidant concentration has to be very high to be effective. So, a serum or moisturizer high in green tea i.e. Camellia Sinensis leaf extract is an excellent choice.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is the ultimate antioxidant for dull and tired skin. It can calm and hydrate the skin, boost the collagen production, tighten fine lines and smooth uneven skin. It can also lighten hyperpigmentation and dark spots and brighten the overall complexion for a fresher skin.

Vitamin A

We have mentioned several times that Vitamin A is actually the same thing as retinol. In fact, retinol is just concentrated vitamin A. It has many skin benefits including: smooths fine lines, fills in wrinkles, softens bumps and rough patches, brightens skin, fades scars and dark marks, and drastically reduces acne. However, it can cause breakouts, dryness, and flakes at first, but it is expected because it is very concentrated. Also, it is not recommended using it along with vitamin C for those with sensitive skin, as it can irritate the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is the best for everything, because it does a little bit of everything, without being too intense. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory, strong against free radicals and premature aging, and excellent at keeping skin soft and supple. It is even more powerful against free radicals when combined with vitamin C.
